Trader Joe's Brand single malts??

topic posted Thu, December 7, 2006 - 9:57 AM by  shari
I saw them yesterday. Does anyone know the specifics of what exactly is bottled? I saw an18 year old MacCallan ( &18 year old Bowmore) for $45. Anyone know if the MacCallan is really the same 18 y/o stuff that you would pay over a hundred bucks for in their standard packaging? Or is it from the same distillery, but a different type of batch? I'm super curious as to what the deal is since it kinda seems too good to be true.... so I'm wondering what he rub is.

Hey, Like I said.. I found the Glenmorangie Port aged for hardly ANY money there.. and it was the same. Sounds like I need to make a ride to Trader Joe's Let me know if you find out for sure though please.

Thanks Glen, but was that in the standard Glenmorangie packaging or a TJ label? These have a Trader Joe's private label with MacCallan or Bowmore in small print below the TJ masthead. I've been finding reviews on yelp and other places regarding this TJ SMS, and some say its really tasty, others say it tastes like crap. So, I continue my quest for more info.

The TJ's 10 yo Glen Grant tastes great.
I suspect that it's genuine (or TJ's would be sued) and that they guarantee a certain purchase for a discount. Maybe it's also bottom-of-the-barrell?

Maybe they bought futures, or particular barrels outright, well before the standard release date. With barrel to barrel variation TJ could just be taking its chances and hoping for a good one! =)

what happens here is TJ's and other small places will buy a couple of casks/barrels so they can have their own private bottling...
            simply that.

it's often a very similiar flavor profile, TJ's first release into this forray was not sitting on the casks to full maturation, ie I bought a 10yo Macallan from them a few years back.. Sounds like they're aging to maturation this time.. Good call TJ's. I may grab one next trip there..

            :)
