I love the Oban 14 year, but it is getting pretty scarce around my area. Anyone have any suggestions for a similar malt? I like the amount of smoke that Oban has, not too much, but you can definitely tell that it is peated.

Sat, July 14, 2007 - 10:38 PMLook for Talisker or Caol Ila - both mid to lightly peated (as opposed to Laphroaig or Ardbeg which are heavily peated) and you can't go wrong with either.
On the other hand, Highland Park is probably the perfect balance of peat & sweet. Definitely worth a try. -

Talisker is much easier to find and cheaper than Coal Ila - but CI is my favourite and well worth the price and a hunt... -

Sun, July 15, 2007 - 11:51 AMWhat part of Cali are you in? There is Scottish store in San Francisco on Sutter I think. a bit pricey but a large selection. Worth a look, or a call. I forget the name of the store.

Sat, July 21, 2007 - 4:15 PMTaliskers is a bit sharper than Oban but certainly worth a try. If you are touring the UK the Oban distillery is a 'must' place to visit, tucked away in a side street just off the harbour. When I was there they had just discovered barrels and barrels of whisky originally destined for Johnny Walker blending but, what with the war and everything, they had never been picked up. It was 65 years old! Strangely that wasn't on the tasting list for the tourists. -
