I have a small but eclectic single malt collection. I have decided that it's time to open a new bottle, and can not decide which.
- Ardbeg Uigeadail
- G&Mac Caol Ila 1988 (17 yr)
- Tobermory 10yr
- Glen Grant Cask Strength 14yr
This isn't bragging - if I had a hundred to choose from, that would be bragging. :-) I'm just looking to start a conversation.
Though I prefer Islay malts to Speyside (and have never tried the Tobermory) not opening that cask str. will be difficult.
Thoughts?

Re: Time for a new one
Tue, May 22, 2007 - 5:38 PMSince no one spoke up, and since I'm a peat freak - the UIgeadail is open & delightful! Better than that - it's all the strength and power of the Ardbeg 10 but with some subtlety. As if a Lagavulin 16 was peeking it's head in the door and telling the youngster to keep it down. I'm not implying a blendy thing - it's pure Ardbeg - just comparing.
Then again, because I'm a cheap skate, I have a Finlaggan with me as I write. For the price, it's unbeatable! Ardbeg is a weekend dram.
Slainte!

No ! Send the G&Mac Caol Ila 1988 (17 yr) to me because I wish to.... um.... well I want to drink it !!!
Sorry I missed the post... You waited a hell of a long time before cracking one
The Caol Ila would have been my recommendation. I am currently devastated cause I saw it in a shop and I had no cards nor cash… Went back about a week later and they had sold the whole shelf ($95 AUD I think). Bugger. Shoppers knew their SMW. Another reason to send it to me !

I'll trade you
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 12:59 AM<<I'll trade you >>
Does anyone do this ? It is hard to buy half a bottle of scotch but easy to trade one.... Well - I always seem to be trading a 1/4 for a 1/4 - a good way to get a taste of something before you have to make a heavy financial commitment to buy a whole bottle....
Maybe we should start a "open bottle scotch traders thread" - but would I trust a stranger to deliver 1/2 or 1/4 a bottle of $400 scotch ??? -

Re: I'll trade you
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 1:09 PMBetter than trading - a tasting!
I'd gladly bring one or two from my liquor closet if I knew other like-minded people were bringing their good stuff as well.
If anyone else is in the L.A. area (especially the Valley) and likes this idea - let's organize it.
Thoughts? -

Re: I'll trade you
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 2:10 PMI organized a blind tasting at my house a few weekends ago in S.F. (mostly hashers). I knew what everyone was bringing (to prevent doubles) and we had 3 pour girls. We went through 10 scotches, one was re-poured after Indian food dinner, and the final "scotch" to round out our dozen was a Cutty Sark/cruzan rum concoction (LOL). Everyone took notes and compared results. Chivas did worse than Cutty Rum. Go figure. -

No accounting for taste - I know someone who like JW Black better than Coal Ila..

Thu, July 12, 2007 - 9:42 PMThe more I think about the idea, the more I like it. Unfortunately, L.A. is a vodka town, so my hopes for this having a decent turn-out are slim.
If you're in the Los Angeles area and you like the idea of a share & explore scotch/whisky tasting - find me here! -

Fri, July 13, 2007 - 8:05 AMS.F. isn't a big scotch town either, but I'm a hasher so it was easy.

Re: I'll trade you
Sat, July 21, 2007 - 4:56 PMCome to Wollongong and I could round up a dozen for tasting before breakfast!
With trading there can be the problem of amounts quality and initial price.
With tastings: you organise it, you know what is coming, find a liquor store that will give a heafty discount for buying a ten bottles of very expensive booze (your fellow tasters won't be able to drink too much more) get twice as many friends and acquaintances as you have bottles (split the cost of the whisky between them) have them bring finger food organise pencils and paper for scoring and some sort of scoring system.
Also what I have done for the two tasting I have organised so far, is to pair people up well before the evening and have them research the malt (without tasting it) I had people bring maps and hand outs, I know one wanted to do a powerpoint presentation, they all really got into it and it became a proper educational experience. We all know not to buy a bottle of Lagavulin as a 'special' gift unless we know the recipient actually likes the stuff, we know Tam Dhu is middle of the road inoffensive easy drinking we all know GlenRothes is a 'blokes drink'. And if it happens to be Robby Burns night get a specialty butcher to create a Haggis or just bake a big lump of salmon in the oven.
Single malt, in fact all hard liquor tasting, (I've done a vodka tasting) has a bit of cachet about it, it feels very special being able to talk a bit about it (without being an anorak) and a tasting is a very friendly way to do it. -
