Is there a reasonably good single malt that I can afford to try? Say around $30?

Mon, August 30, 2004 - 10:13 AMYou might be able to get a Dalmore 12yr in that range. But you get better choices in the $45 - $50 range... -

Re: Cheap & good?
Mon, August 30, 2004 - 5:29 PMIf you can, spend $40 and get the ten-year-old Laphroaig distillery bottling.
There are Balvenies close to the $30 pricepoint that will be reasonaby good. BevMo.com lists a Bowmore for the low $20s. -

Re: Cheap & good?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 3:05 PMThe 10-year Aberlour and Glenmorangie are both quite drinkable. At $38 on BevMo, I love the Glenmorangie Port Wood. -

Re: Cheap & good?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 3:17 PMI can get the 10 year Cask Strength Aberlour and several others for $24 a liter down in Mexico. A strange place to buy Scotch it might seem but it is the same thing I can get at BevMo. It's just in a bigger bottle and duty free.

Re: Cheap & good?
Sat, September 18, 2004 - 8:42 PMI second the Glenmorangie port wood, it's pretty much my favorite scotch (and it's $35 at Costco). The only one I like better is the Glenmorangie Madiera finish (kinda hard to find).

Cheapest I've ever seen it is low $50's at Bevmo (which doesn't ship everywhere...

Thu, September 23, 2004 - 6:12 PMA true score is the duty-free Laphroig three pack (3 1/3 liter bottles of 10 year, 15 year, and 10 year strong) at Heathrow. When a friend is known to be passing through, let them know and they can deliver... -

Re: Cheap & good?
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 2:33 PMHello, I'm new here.
Following up on the comments elsewhere in this thread, I can also heartily recommend the Glenmorangie Port Wood. It is my favorite day in, day out single malt, and the one I use to introduce non-whisky drinkers to the joy of single malt. It can be had, as has been noted, for less than $40.
If they have it in your area, an excellent place to find good deals on single malt Scotch is Trader Joe's. They have even started bottling their own single malts:
- A 10 year Aberlour best described as "dangerous"
- A 10 year Macallan with a rich, earthy flavor
- A 10 year Bowmore with a strong, saline, Islay character
All of these for $19.99 a bottle. They seem to be on a new cask of the Aberlour - while it's still good, it's not nearly as good as the first bottling.
They also usually carry the Glenmorangie wood finishes for $32.99 (Port Wood, Sherry Wood, and occasionally the Madiera and new Burgundy), Balvenie Double Wood (another favorite) for $31.99, and some others. It varies from store to store.
They also have blended - JWB, JWR, The Famous Grouse, and a TJ's house blended - for excellent prices.
Just under $40, you'll also find the Balvenie Founder's Reserve (10 year) and MacCallan 10 year Fine Oak. I gave the Macallan as a gift this Christmas to the biggest Macallan fan I know, and he raved about it. The Balvenie is spicy, light, and flavorful, though I think I still prefer the Doublewood over the other Balvenie offerings.
It's nice to find people eager to talk about Scotch. Quite frankly, after discovering fine whisky (and you owe it to yourself to look beyond Scotland, even if that sounds like heresy :-) I really have no desire for other liquors anymore, besides the occasional Gibson or Gin and Tonic :-)

Re: Cheap & good?
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 2:45 PMThe Glenmorangie port wood is a great choice -- I used it to introduce my bro in law with a bottle of this (~$40CDN). He loved it. I also picked up a cheap bottle of 12 yr Glenlivet for ($36CDN) as my "everyday" scotch. It's great. The Balvenie doublewood is my current fave and it goes for around $50CDN.

Re: Cheap & good?
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 1:27 AMI just had the end of a bottle of Macallan 14 the other day--don't know what that goes for because it was a host being rather generous. I am, however, now intrigued by the Macallan Fine Oak 15--what does that taste like?

Re: Cheap & good?
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 4:26 PMIf you're looking for well under $30 (and depending on where you live), Trader Joe's has some good inexpensive choices that are decent on the palate. Lismore is $12-$13, and both Dalmore and Bowmore are under $20. But, if you're lable to spend more on scotch that's closer to $30, Laphroaig is a really good choice. For a little over 30, Macallan 12yr, is a great choice, and for the next level up (40's-50's), I'd go with Oban or The Balvenie. My personal favorite, under $30 is actually a blend. You can't go wrong with Chivas, and you can get it almost anywhere. Good choice if you're stuck in an airport, hotel, elevator, or your living room. -

Re: Cheap & good?
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 9:21 AMIf we're talking cheap-ass but outstanding whisky than I'd argue at under $20 bucks TJ's mysterious Finlaggan Old Reserve has to be on the list! Jim Murray gives it a 94 and had this to say about it: "Someone has had access to one or two of the best casks the east coast of Islay has to offer. If you don't get a bottle of this, you'll regret it for the rest of your life". For those of you unfamiliar with it, it's Lagavulin and it drinks like pretty old whisky so it's probably a vatting of some sort.
While we're on the subject of TJ's label scotch - these are Duncan Taylor bottlings so they shouldn't suck. I have tried the Mac but preferred the Aberlour 10 and the Bowmore was quite good. A tad on the flowery side but I'd say in a way that was true to the distillery character.
WRT 'phroiag 10: yes, an outstanding expression for sure but for a few bucks more I'd say the cask strength 10 yo is far superior. Along the same lines Ardbeg 10 IMHO is the best value in scotch at around $32. One can also find pretty good expressions from Whisky Galore - Duncan Taylor's entry point line in case you were wondering - but as with all indie-bottlings they can be hit or miss. I have an Aultmore 14 that is pretty good and a knock-your-socks-off, punch-you-in-your-throat Caol Ila 12 that is so wild and raspy, untamed and over the top it ... well, it just rocks.
Disclaimer: if you're not in to phenolic/peaty/medicinal drams than avoid most Islays' and especially avoid distilleries like Laphroiag, Ardbeg and Caol Ila. The Finlaggan mentioned above might be a good cross-over dram for those who like the complexity of Highland/Speyside malts and are looking for an intro to Islay style. -

Re: Cheap & good?
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 2:39 AMPerhaps this is off topic. i am new to this tribe as well as new to the world of Scotch. I am truly fascinated by it. I am eager to learn what it is that I like and don't like. So without breaking the bank would you guys recommend buying samplers? If so does Glenmorangie have samplers of the Port Wood, Adeirs Wood and any others? they sound kick ass. Not stick to milder ones, does Laphroiag have samples as well? I want to sample the full spectrum of flavor profiles.
Thanks!

Re: Cheap & good?
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 4:55 PMDo you already have a good book on Scotch?
Also don't neglect the American bourbons. They have their own unique flavors as well. I'm not well versed on them--I know more about the Isley single malts than anything else.
Laphroig 15 year is a must. Its certainly the best that I've had so far. I haven't tasted any of the really aged whiskeys as yet though...I've tried a lot of the younger ones. The Laphroig 15 year certainly seems to be the best in all the whiskeys up 15 year for single malts...for me anyways. -

thanks
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 4:09 PMI can do nothing but rave about this tribe. I have gotten the best advice from reading these threads and bought some really great bottles based on this advice. It takes the headache out of choosing from a wide array of sometimes quite expensive malts. I just picked up a Balvenie double on members recomendations and its awsome. I also got my favorite, Oban 14 and a Macallan 12 ($31 on sale sweeeet). I keep Dalmore 12 as my everyday as its only $20 at TJs. thanks folks.

Re: Cheap & good?
Thu, August 16, 2007 - 10:48 AMMcClelland offers decent, very reasonably priced (~$20-$25) single malts. There is no McClelland's Distillery - rather they are other distillery's spirits bottled by McClellands at a lower price point. I believe a number of their current offerings are actually ~5 year Bowmore. I think these make a great every day scotch for those with a small scotch budget. -
