A friend brought it over as part of a blind tasting I had last Sat. Other entries included Aberlour 12, Glenrothes, Lagavullin, Highland Park. Caol Ila did not do well, sad to say.

Which bottle? Was it the new 18 year import? Or something older?

        18. Not impressive.

I actually like it...although, not having been at your tasting, I don't really have a reality based opinion to convey. Of course, I got a deal on my 1 liter bottle in England...it was a tough call between that and the Ardbeg...but I figured that my friends know Ardbeg but didn't know Coal Ila so well. I rather like the smoky smoothness with a hint of peat. However, too each his own. I also freely admit that I like Ardbeg better than Coal Ila 18 year in general, especially 12 years and older.

      <<18. Not impressive.>>

That is one of the wonderful things about Scotch – there is so much variation. For me, the 18 Coal Iia is fannn-tastic!

Glenrothes (which I also like) is a certain type of scotch – and is very different to CI.. If you liked Glenrothes (I assume it was the 12 YO) – try Delwhinnie (not sure of the spelling).. Both these are lighter and less intense. I think they all are about slightly higher than 40% Alcohol.

It is interesting how when you get a few scotches out – people gravitate towards different ones..

Now, Highland Park… what was that ? We have something here by that name for about the price of JW Red…. Our (Melbourne's) Highland Park is not a SMW I think – but would have to check.. I have never had it ..

PS – checked the spelling of Delwhinnie, which I spelt right, at www.maltmaniacs.org/ADHD/dis...ries.html a great site..

Highland Park is from the Orkney Islands and if it runs the cost of JW Red, it is *not* the same. Too peaty for me, but as you mentioned....

Find I will some of this Highland Park... "too peaty"... sounds like it might be worth a try :)

          Thanks !

Yeah, I've been hard put to find a whiskey that is "too peaty" myself. There are differences in refinement...but unless someone is pouring fried peat bog in a glass, I'm there.

I think I had some Highland Park when I was last in England...I don't remember it much though...maybe it was the Cuban cigars that were making the rounds? I mean, usually, I don't smoke cigars at all, depending more on a nip of Laphroiag 15 to reach a similar state without all the smoke and ashes...

              Bliss !

              <<Laphroiag 15>>

Rocks ! But it is one of the few I think about having some water in.. a friend keeps his in the freezer - not something I would do -but still very drinkable when it comes out of there ...

You definitely should have water in the cask strength. I keep my Laphroiag in a dark place in a floor level cabinet...on the floor. Keeps the thing cooler. Have to confess to having never had iced or chilled Laphroiag....

I like a little bit of ice with Laphroiag, but I am nuckin' futs.

Is there a peatiness scale kinda like Scoville for heat for peppers?

Maybe there's some kind of scotch test like the Myers-Briggs personality score or the political test that has the 4 different axes (conservative/liberal & big-guvmint/small-guvmint). There'd be peat, smoke, finish, and sweetness. Well, the axes need work. So the questions would range from actual taste questions to more metaphorical questions.

There is alots of ways of gradeing scotch...

Google it..... but I like the info at www.maltmadness.com/

I would love to go and find out first hand www.whisky.cc/tasting.htm

Peat - don't the distilleries aim for some sort of parts per million? I think Ardbeg is up at about 50 or so. Then again, there's quality. Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10 are both extremely peaty, but completely different malts!!

Caol Ila 15 was the second single malt I ever had. Ardbeg 10 was the first. You can't get either now...the Ardbeg 10 that's out there is new, different. Haven't tried it, but everything Ardbeg does is outstanding.

Now that Caol Ila was life changing. That's the reason I'm whatever kind of malt freak I may be. I've had the 18 - it's terrific, but not the same.

Highland Park is peaty only in comparison to a Macallan or the like, IMHO. It's about the most perfect single malt in the world. Again, IMHO. And each age gets exponentially better then the last (12, 15, 18, 25, 30....)

You started well :) Thanks for the information...

I think Coal Ila is only released every few years,... I am sure we have had a bottle of the 15 year old - will consult with my drinking buddy...

I have started hunting for a bottle Highland Park to price it - not trying to hard though,,, but so far I have not seen it...

you mean actual particles of peat? but isn't peat dirt, moss etc

from Wiki "Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation matter"

so what are the parts per million being counted?

I am sitting here now with a bottle of Highland Park... not too common in Melbourne - but when it comes to Scotch one must make a special effort....

I don’t think it is peaty. Certainly not like Talisker, let alone Laiphroig... it was about $60 AUD (JW Red is about $25-30 AUD) and it is the 12 year old... it is good, but my taste buds reckon that something like Bowmore is better and about the same price. It has more peat, but hardly a "peaty scotch ". If you can buy it for the same cost as JW Red - you are blessed for it is certainly a much much much much much better scotch !

Thanks for the tip though... it was not a bum steer - it is a good scotch - but not what I was expecting :)

I have never tried Highland Park. It is reasonably priced and I have seen it at my local shop. I will try some because I am very fond of peaty scotch. I also am extremely fond of those that are very smokey. Any favorites from anyone along the lines of "smokey"?
