peter dawson with the foil and tax label still on...its a gift for my cuz who will surely drink it...my question is...the seal is broken and it is evaporating...i won't bbe able to give it to him for a while...
do you think i should leave it be? or crack it and seal it?
i realize its more valuable as a salable item w' the taz sticker but i'm more concerned w' quality and evap

Re: 80 year old bottle
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 6:50 AMI think if it were mine, I would securely and tightly wrap the seal in plastic rap covering the entire seal, stamp and all. Then I would seal it in wax, by dipping it four or five times in melted wax. I think that would seal it and be removable so as not to compromise its value......just my idea. -

I would make sure it was not worth $10,000 and share it with a few friends :)

Re: 80 year old bottle
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 9:53 AMwell... couple things I was taught about the age of scotch.
The age of the stuff INSIDE the bottle is the length of time it was in the barrel. So it is a 12 or a 16 year old because that is how long it sat. Once it came out.. and was bottled.. it never aged.. or improved. So the dusty 25 year old bottle I got of 12 year old scotch is still a 12 year old scotch, NOT 37 the fact that the bottle is 80 years old.. only makes it special if that was a rare batch... or a very good one. because it is not very difficult to find. If it was an 80 year old bottle of a crappy scotch.. then it is just old crappy scotch. So.. My advice.. do some research.. find out if in the year the bottle was put out.. the scotch was listed as a good batch. and go from there. -

Very true,.... -

Re: 80 year old bottle
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 12:51 PMTrue. Crappy scotch is highly unlikely to get better with aging in the bottle or out. -

Re: 80 year old bottle
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 1:06 PMWell, with the caveat that, with some merely crappy boozes, if you drink enough, then they age reasonably well through the evening... :) (If they're truly ghastly, then they age negatively during the evening...)

Re: 80 year old bottle
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 11:15 PMWhen I was in the Guard, 1996, a guy found a pack of smokes in a desk drawer hidden away in an old storage room in the armory. Didn't have the warning label on it - tells you how old the pack was. Fucking idiots opened it and smoked 'em. They were terrible (even for hardcore smokers) but that unopened pack must've been worth $$$. Yeah, booze doesn't age once bottled, unlike wine, which is good and bad. -

Re: 80 year old bottle
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 8:57 AMactually this is of interest in this case... while the scotch certainly will NOT age any further as pointed out already itWILL mellow in the bottle over time. especially if opened...
I've had the pleasure of tasting a Macallan 25, that was distilled in 1969.. a few years ago, in 2003 I think, and at that point it was quite old... and VERY smooth..
oh god. it was good. -
